This is the part where I toot my own horn. After over 10 years of creating and selling products, I’ve become known as something of an email marketing wizard. So I decided to start this “You’ve Got Mail Series“, aptly named after the 90s classic. Here I’ll be dropping some wisdom from time to time. Let me know what you think! Set Up For Success Always Choose Opt-In Not only is it bad proactive to spam people, your internet service provider, as well as your email provider, can each go ahead and block you from sending emails if you abuse the privilege by bombarding people with emails they never wanted. Instead, create an avenue for people to Opt-In. Not only will people tend to be more engaged (higher open rats and clicked rates, but also you stay on the right side of internet etiquette). Win Win! A smaller more engaged list is better It’s tempting to go scouting for email addresses and to boast of your large email database, but how many of those people are actually engaged? Email newsletter engagement is a strong predictor of other conversions including likelihood to purchase. So work on having a smaller, more engaged list than a large, spam center. Sending Email IF I see one more ‘do not respond to this email’ or a ‘the return account is not monitored’ I’m gonna lose it. Can we agree to stop this ridiculousness now? Why would you not want to hear from your subscribers? You should always choose a reply address that you monitor. Constant feedback from your customers is vital for your continued improvement.
