How Important is your Company Culture?

Company Culture- Never Too Small
This is not a warm and fuzzy thing. Nor is it solely about cool office spaces with conference rooms made of shipping containers (although those are pretty nifty). It’s the attitudes and habitudes of the people who work for you. You may think this is something only big corporations should worry about, but I could argue that it’s even more important for small businesses. Here are some questions to use to gauge if your culture needs some tending to. What kind of Behaviours are you practicing regularly? The best way to encourage your staff to meet your expectations is to lead by example. Your employees are constantly watching you and subconsciously taking cues of what kind of behaviours you’ll accept. For example, are you always late to meetings? Do you frequently lie or confuzzle the facts? These kinds of things matter! What Rules are you being deliberate about? As a business owner you shouldn’t assume that people will automatically clue in to the kind of culture you want. You’ll be shocked to come to yourself in a moment of realization that the company you’re looking at is not what you ever imagined. Corporate culture is like a flame; you have to constantly tend to. If you don’t, in place of where your culture should’ve been, will emerge something more vicious, because nature abhors vacuum. Are there consequences for breaking these rules? So rules are great, but of course there’s more involved. Human beings will always do exactly what they can get away with. So it’s important to make sure that there are consequences every time a rule is subverted. I’ve found out that in the course of running your business, you’ll come across moments that will make or break your company culture. How you act is extremely important. Because culture is a living, breathing thing that needs constant tending to and deliberateness in order to truly make a difference.
